A church email scam is a type of phishing scam that targets church members or staff by impersonating a religious leader or an official from the church. The scammer usually asks for money, gift cards, or personal information, claiming that it is for a charitable cause or an urgent need. The scammer often uses a fake email address that looks similar to the real one, or hacks into the real email account of the church leader or official. The scammer may also use social engineering techniques to make the request seem more convincing, such as mentioning personal details or using a friendly tone.
Church email scams are becoming more common and sophisticated, and they can cause financial losses and damage the trust between the church and its members. According to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, some of the signs that an email request from a church leader or official is a scam are:
● The email asks you to buy gift cards and share the PINs or codes with the sender.
● The email urges you to act quickly or keep the request confidential.
● The email uses an unusual or different email address or phone number than the one you normally use to contact the church leader or official.
● The email contains spelling or grammatical errors or uses a different style or tone than usual.
If you receive a suspicious email request from a church leader or official, you should not reply to it or click on any links or attachments. Instead, you should contact the church directly using a verified phone number or email address and confirm if the request is legitimate. You should also report the scam to the FTC at [ReportFraud.ftc.gov] and to your local police.
